Google free font “Roboto Serif” download and installation
Google has recently launched a new version of its open source, free Roboto variable font and brought back the serif, appropriately named Roboto Serif, of course.
The font was designed by Google in collaboration with Greg Gazdowicz of Commercial Type to create a more readable serif font for its Roboto Sans fonts, for those who need nostalgic font material.
Rather than just adding some serifs to the old Roboto font, Roboto Serif was redrawn from scratch for each letter to create a font that is "both based on Roboto and a new and original design.
Rob Giampietro, User Experience Manager at Google, said. The new typeface still uses the same vertical proportions as Roboto Sans, making it possible to mix serif and sans serif versions in one design.
As Vox points out, it may also help that thicker, retro-style sans serif fonts are making a big comeback after years of dominance by minimalist sans serif typography. Serif fonts are also considered easier to read thanks to more pronounced letterforms, and Google's new font is a variable font that automatically changes and optimizes letterforms to fit different sized displays.
Google has been using its Roboto font for more than a decade, and it was originally introduced with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) as the default font for the company's mobile operating system. Over the years, Roboto has had many variants, although it has slowly but steadily been replaced by Product Sans (and its Google Sans variant, also known as the "Pixel" font) as the primary font for the company's various products.
