Win11 code indicates that taskbar icons are optionally never merged
Since the introduction of Win11, there have been many criticisms from users of the various new designs, but none more so than the forced merging of icons in the taskbar.
Due to the forced merging of icons, multiple windows of the same program became extremely difficult to distinguish in Win11, and it was almost impossible to tell exactly how many windows there were unless you hovered directly over them.
This problem is finally being fixed.
Recently, a user found a hint to taskbar grouping information in the code of Win11's first canary preview, version 25314.
Given that the Canary version is packaged and uploaded directly without checks, this could well mean that Microsoft is bringing back the "never merge" taskbar button, which prevents icons for the same application from being merged together in the taskbar.
This is obviously good news for users.
