iPadOS 16.4 released: Apple Pencil adds new features, new emoji and more

In addition to the new iOS release, Apple has begun rolling out feature updates for its tablets. iPadOS 16.4 is now available for compatible iPads, bringing new features and bug fixes for the Apple Pencil, as well as other changes across the operating system.

What's new in iPadOS 16.4?

• Apple Pencil hover tilt and azimuth support lets you preview your markers at any angle in Notes and other supported apps on the fourth-generation iPad Pro 11-inch and the sixth-generation iPad Pro 12.9-inch.
• New emoji: iPadOS now features 21 new emoji, including animals, gestures and objects.
• Notifications from web apps now appear on the Home screen.
• Duplicate detection is now available for photos and videos in the iCloud Shared Photos library.
• Maps in the Weather app now support VoiceOver.
• Your iPad can dim the brightness when a video contains a bright flash or strobe effect.
• This update fixes an issue with the Apple Pencil's response when drawing or writing in the Notes application.
• This update fixes an issue where a child's purchase request may not appear on a parent's or guardian's device.
• This update fixes an issue where Matter-compatible thermostats stopped responding when paired with Apple Home.

Which iPad models support iPadOS 16.4?

All iPads running iPadOS 16 can download version 16.4. The following is a list of supported models:

• iPad Pro (all models)
• iPad Air 3 and above
• iPad 5th generation and above
• iPad mini 5 and above

You can install iPadOS 16.4 by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
