Gmail is currently unable to retrieve email from Microsoft Outlook accounts
If you use Google's Gmail to access email sent to your Microsoft Outlook or Hotmail account, you may have noticed that your inbox is not as full as usual. This is because Gmail is currently experiencing a problem called a sync failure with these accounts.
Google's Workspace status update page (via 9to5Google) began reporting issues with Gmail syncing with Outlook and Hotmail at around 12:10 pm Eastern time. Since then, it has provided frequent updates on the issue. Google states:
IMAP synchronization with Microsoft servers is down, causing synchronization issues with the Gmail application.
The latest update on this issue, posted at 15:30 ET, reads:
To date, our engineering investigation has not found any issues with the authentication of the Gmail application, and we continue to investigate the root cause.
Google is "working with the Microsoft team" to resolve the issue. Earlier this week, spam filters for Outlook and Hotmail were not working on the web, but the issue has since been resolved.
We'll update this post with more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, Gmail users who want to access their Outlook or Hotmail email can simply use Microsoft's application to handle both email services.
